about US
5 years ago, I received a frantic call from my brother that he was in trouble. My brother, Mike, is developmentally disabled on the Autism Spectrum. He had been living in low-income housing with my Dad's supervision. He needed help, so he moved in with my husband (Bob) and I and our two sons still living at home.

When Mike moved in with us, we were naïve about how much assistance he really needed. He came to us a lonely, frightened man - struggling physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. After several months, we realized that he would have the highest quality of life if he was able to have more independence: to live near us, but not with us.

After considering housing options in our area, we determined that there was not any suitable housing for Mike. However, God has blessed us with available land adjacent to our home. With much prayer and discussion, we felt that the Holy Spirit was calling us to build a Catholic home for persons with disabilities, to help those who find themselves in a similar situation to ours.

And so began the McGivney Homes. The first home provides supported independent living, built on a lot adjacent to our home. It has 2 levels consisting of 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (2 of which are wheelchair-accessible), both full kitchen and laundry services on each level, and several common areas.

We now have 3 residents living and thriving in Catholic community - 2 men with Down Syndrome and one man on the Autism spectrum: my brother, Mike.
